ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved major power sector initiatives for Gilgit-Baltistan and Gwadar, including a landmark 100MW solar project in GB to ensure uninterrupted, affordable and clean energy for the region.
Chairing a meeting on the power situation in both areas, the prime minister ordered immediate implementation of a comprehensive plan to permanently resolve electricity issues in Gwadar Port City. He directed all relevant institutions to work in full coordination to ensure reliable and cost-effective power supply.
Issuing directives for the swift commencement of the 100MW solar project in GB, the PM emphasised the importance of sustainable and environmentally friendly electricity for the region. He reaffirmed that the welfare and economic uplift of GB remain top federal priorities, with efforts focused on promoting industrial activity, investment and overall economic growth.
PM Shehbaz further noted that uninterrupted electricity in Gwadar would significantly boost national economic activity and investment, adding that power supply for industries must meet global standards.
Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari briefed the meeting, highlighting that due to prompt actions by the ministry, power supply disruptions in Gwadar had already been cut by 42 per cent. A detailed plan has been prepared to stabilise voltage within six months, alongside measures to improve electricity supply for domestic and commercial consumers.
In short-term plans, 9.7MW of solar capacity will be installed in key government institutions within 8 to 12 months. For long-term needs, a 40MW solar project will be developed in Gwadar to ensure sustained power availability.
Electricity demand in Gwadar is expected to rise by 30 per cent in the coming years due to port expansion, industrial activity and rapid urbanisation.
The 100MW solar project for GB comprises an 18MW rooftop programme and an 82MW utility-scale project, both scheduled for completion by 2027. Jointly executed by the federal energy ministry and the GB government, these initiatives are projected to save the government Rs1 billion annually. The GB government will also ensure timely land allocation, infrastructure and other necessary support.
Later, chairing another meeting, PM Shehbaz reiterated that transparent, timely and accountable execution of development projects remains a top government priority. He directed officials to devise reforms spanning all stages—from planning and approval to procurement and staffing.
He also announced that he will personally chair a steering committee comprising federal and provincial stakeholders to oversee reforms in project planning and execution, while thanking development partners including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for their continued support.
